NEW HAVEN KICKS-OFF RENT REBATE PROGRAM
(5/13/2010) NEW HAVEN- The City of New Haven will begin to accept applications to the State of Connecticut’s Rent Rebate Program on Monday, May 17, 2010. Residents interested in applying for this program can do so by appointment only. No walk in appointments will be accepted.
Mayor John DeStefano acknowledged organizations that make it possible for seniors and persons with disabilities to apply to this State Program. “Our Elderly Services Department has built partnerships with for-profit and non-profit organizations so that, in the aftermath of last year’s cuts, seniors and persons with disabilities will still be able to receive more than $2.2 million in benefits,” said DeStefano. Staff members have been trained to accept applications from their own residents at: Berger Apartments, Casa Otonal, Community Builders, FairBank Apartments, Fair Haven Elderly, the Housing Authority of New Haven, Park Ridge Towers, Tower One/Tower East.
In addition, those who apply will be given the opportunity to register with the City’s Emergency Department in order to receive rapid notification in case of a disaster. The City has asked the Area Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut to collaborate in the Rent Rebate effort in order to assist those who wish to do so to also complete the Benefits Check-up, an on-line form that, with a single application, enables people to check their eligibility for more than 250 public benefit programs. The Area Agency has trained volunteers who will assist people to file these applications at some locations.
This year only persons aged 55 and older will be able to submit applications to the Rent Rebate Program at senior centers. Others will be given appointments at City Hall and four branch libraries, at Bella Vista, River Run Apartments, and Westville Manor. Sign-up lists will be posted for appointments at various housing complexes.
Anyone younger than 55 who does not live in senior housing should call the new Rent Rebate Appointment Line, 203-946-8550 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays beginning Monday, May 17th. Residents are asked to leave only a name and phone number. They will be called and given an appointment. The program continues through September 15. All checks will be disseminated in October, regardless of when the application is submitted.
